The 2015 election season posed a unique set of challenges. Without any statewide offices on the ballot, it was the first time in 16 years that the legislative races were at the top of the ticket.

Facing record low turnout many Democrats were particularly vulnerable.

Christie Cruises: Wins by 22

There was little doubt that presidential want-to-be Chris Christie was well on his way to a landslide victory over a Democratic candidate that can only be called a sacrificial lamb. This wildly popular Republican governor, basking in a warm glow of unremitting national press adulation, made it clear that defeating DACC and demolishing its legislative majority was firmly in his sights.

Riding his surging wave of popularity, Christie aggressively targeted the Democratic legislature by putting his money where his mouth was. In his zeal to demonstrate his ideological conversion and political command of a blue state, the governor went so far as to pay for and appear in a flight of network television in New York City – the most expensive media market in the country.

On Election Day, the Governor basked in his historic victory margin. Why wouldn’t he?  Christie carried some competitive districts by 30 points! Despite this popular Republican’s tsunami, Democrats in both houses of the New Jersey legislature held every seat in their respective majorities.  

Simply stated, our innovative approach won races that in years gone by would have faced almost certain defeat.

Bonier’s unique methodology enabled us to better understanding our electorate.  It clearly identified that distinctive group of voters who were staunchly supporting the Governor but who could be convinced to vote for Democratic legislative candidates.
